Pope Receives Obama's Gift, Supplied by St. Jude Shop

President's administration calls on the DiCocco Family to help find the perfect gift for the Pope!

I am told by a source in Philadelphia that the President will present the Pope with a stole that once belonged to St. John Neumann when he visits Rome on the 10th. Apparently, [Obama]administration officials contacted "The DiCocco Family's St. Jude Shop" in Pennsylvania for help in locating an "appropriate gift" for the Holy Father. The DiCocco's are no stranger to the Pope Benedict. They created the Papal Chair for Benedict's visit to the National Shrine last year. (They also worked on some of the furnishings at Mother Angelica's Shrine in Hanceville). My source tells me that St. Peter's Church at the St. John Neumann Shrine donated the stole--a second class relic-- for the special occasion. Now you know what to look for during the President's meeting with the Pope.-Raymond Arroyo

The DiCocco Family has a history of devotion to this special Saint of Philadelphia. In 2000 Mrs. Norma DiCocco, CEO of the St. Jude Shop, traveled to the Czech Republic on a pilgrimage to the saint's hometown only to discover that knowledge about their most holy countryman was scarce. In fact many of the youth of the area were not even aware that their hometown had provided the church with a saint! The area was poor and even after many years, locals were still not able to raise enough money for a statue of their saint for the local church. Mrs. DiCocco's heart was moved and she responded with the same generous spirit of ministry that inspired her, along with her late husband Louis, to found the St. Jude Shop nearly fifty years ago. She made plans at once for the St. Jude Liturgical Arts to begin work on a magnificent life-sized statue of the saint which was then donated to the town of Prachatice, birthplace of St. John Neumann. When asked to comment on the gift, Mrs. DiCocco stated, "I've had answers to prayers through his intercession myself and wanted to see his devotion spread." ...a gift of love from our family to the brethren of one of our most beloved Saints!

May is the Month of Mary

Ave Maria...

The month of May is the "month which the piety of the faithful has especially dedicated to Our Blessed Lady," and it is the occasion for a "moving tribute of faith and love which Catholics in every part of the world give to the Mother of our Lord Jesus Christ. During this month Christians, both in church and in the privacy of the home, offer up to Mary from their hearts an especially fervent and loving homage of prayer and veneration. In this month, too, the benefits of God's mercy come down to us from her throne in greater abundance" (Paul VI: Encyclical on the Month of May, no. 1).

This Christian custom of dedicating the month of May to the Blessed Virgin arose at the end of the 13th century. In this way, the Church was able to Christianize the secular feasts which were wont to take place at that time. In the 16th century, books appeared and fostered this devotion.
The practice became especially popular among the members of the Jesuit Order — by 1700 it took hold among their students at the Roman College and a bit later it was publicly practiced in the Gesu Church in Rome. From there it spread to the whole Church.

The practice was granted a partial indulgence by Pius VII in 1815 and a plenary indulgence by Pius IX in 1859. With the complete revision of indulgences in 1966 and the decreased emphasis on specific indulgences, it no longer carries an indulgence; however it certainly falls within the category of the First General Grant of Indulgences. (A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who, in the performance of their duties and in bearing the trials of life, raise their mind with humble confidence to God, adding — even if only mentally — some pious invocation.

We are proud to offer a wide line of gifts and books designed to inspire people of faith to be more like the holy Mother of our Savior.

Lifting the superstition from the St Joseph Home Sale Kit

Many customers have asked us about the practice of burying a St Joseph Statue to sell their homes. We have come across a great deal of superstition surrounding this when our customers sheepishly ask about “What saint do I bury to sell my house?” As Catholics it is important to rise above many of the popular notions that have evolved over this action and to develop a more mature behavior based on Faith and not superstition.

The origins of the practice of burying a St Joseph statue are blurred in a variety of stories. As best as we have found, it has its beginnings in a story of a convent of nuns in Renaissance Italy who wished to sell their over crowded convent so that they could move into a bigger one. After many months they had no success, so after many hours of prayer they were inspired to direct their prayers to ask St Joseph to intercede for them. They believed that since St. Joseph was responsible for the welfare of the Holy Family and is the patron of families everywhere, he would be an effective powerful intercessor in the selling of their convent home. As a symbolic gesture and as a demonstration of their Faith, the sisters buried a small statue of St Joseph to symbolize that all their worries and concern were “buried” and given up to God through St Joseph. They continued their prayers and within 9 days their convent was sold at a favorable price.

The practice fell out of popularity until the 1980’s when we noticed that people were asking for “small St Joseph statues to help sell their home.” We observed that those who said the powerful St Joseph Novena had the greatest success. A Novena is a prayer that one says for 9 days. We also noticed at that time that several enterprising manufactures began marketing a St Joseph Home Sale Kit that contained the statue, the novena prayer and a brief description of the origin of the practice. So we began to carry the St Joseph Home sale kits in our store

The notion of where and how to bury the statue is the part of this practice that falls into the area of superstition. Near the For Sale Sign? Statue upside down? Right side up? In the day? At night? Under a full moon? God does not care. God does care about devout prayer, setting an honest, fair price and trusting in Him to provide for you. If done with this attitude, we are confident you too will have great success with the St Joseph Home Sale Kit as hundreds of our customers have done.
